Learn About the Types of Armor Plates

In military battlefields, there are good reasons why officers should turn to armor plates alongside the soft armors. In order to resist handgun rounds, military officers turn to soft armor. On the other hand, when it comes to rifle threats, armor plates are more useful. Armor plates support the soft armor. The quality of the plates depends on the nature of rounds they can resist. Armor plates exist in two main categories: the Level III and Level IV.

Level III armor plates protect against officers from rifle rounds while Level IV plates protect them from rifle rounds that can pierce the armor. Armor plates come from different materials with special coverings.  The interior material conquers the bullet while the covering helps control it while inside the plate. Ceramic and polyethene are the most widespread types of armor plates. Ceramic plates have been on the market for quite a while. They operate by crushing the impact of rounds and thereby slowing it down. Once decelerated, the backing material or covering holds the round inside the plate. A major downside of ceramic plates is their being fragile, making them vulnerable to multiple rounds. You can learn more about plate armors at Plate Carrier Zone.

When a round hits the plate, it creates a cavitation effect from the point of impact. The caved area becomes less resistant, which can easily make the plate break along the line. Another kind of plate is the polyethene version. Made from a specially designed plastic, it can conquer rifle rounds. Known as poly armor, these types of plates work differently from their ceramic counterparts. They have the ability to expand an incoming round and blow its energy off completely.

The polyethene plate achieves this by exploiting the revolving mechanism of the round. When the round makes its way inside the plate, friction takes place, and this causes a portion of the plate to melt. After capturing the bullet, the plate cools and seals the space around the bullet. This makes the plate even stronger against multiple hits.

In addition to ceramic and polyethene armor plates, steel plates also exist. They provide a less expensive option, making them a practical option. When you decide to buy armor plates, it is advisable to have a good knowledge of what is in the market and choose the right model to meet your expectations. This can happen if you analyze the benefits and downsides of each option.
